Banking on business for a bright future
- Details
ALL leading industries employ business-related graduates with knowledge in fields such as accounting, business management, human resource management, marketing and finance.According to a recent report, among the top 10 highest paying jobs in Malaysia, five involve business majors. These profiles include a budget and finance director, marketing director, risk management director, vice-president of finance and strategy director. This proves that as a fresh graduate, you can build a lifelong career in the country with business-related degrees and be part of the major industries in Malaysia.
According to Dr Sugumaran Selladurai, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Accountancy, and Management at SEGi University, since the demand is higher than supply, there are more jobs available with a lesser number of talent available to fill these positions.“A business-related degree is someone’s pass to make a career change. In fact, many students take up an MBA course at SEGi University so that they can make a career shift later in their careers,” he said.“So many business-related degree students dream of becoming entrepreneurs and Malaysia is a great country to do so.

Technology And The Talent Gap
- Details
From the moment we wake up, to the last thing we do at night, technology is transforming our lives.Digital technology is also revolutionising the workplace and reframing the debate on how successful businesses operate. It is creating new opportunities for connecting with customers and opening new channels to markets. The businesses that are prepared and able to adapt fastest to this change will be those that reap the rewards. But what does this mean for finance and shared services? In the face of seemingly bewildering technological possibilities, how should business leaders even begin to navigate the tech landscape? Where should they place their digital bets? And how can they take advantage of the significant opportunities that digital may present?
Addressing Talent Shortages
Almost everything we do leaves a digital footprint – a data record in the vast data pool that humanity is creating. Human societies are living and benefit from a life based around technology. Businesses talk of automation of the factory floor or the shared services centre, replacing people with robots and intelligent tools that can perform tasks with increased efficiency and reduced cost. This creates opportunities but also challenges the basis of our traditional ways of working. For today’s technology-enabled working practices, organisations need to equip themselves with new skills, whether by “upskilling” or raising the skill levels of existing employees; “repainting” executives with new skills; or by recruiting externally. Many of these skills may not be available among the current talent pool, requiring leaders to think carefully about the future skills mix and to create clear and coherent development plans.

MALAYSIAN consumers lost tens of millions of ringgit annually as a result of unsatisfactory services from their telecommunications providers, said a consumer affairs group. According to the National Consumer Complaints Centre (NCCC) annual reports, customers lost RM16 million in 2016 and RM15.87 million in 2017 from telco-related issues, said senior manager for legal and policy matters Shabana Naseer Ahmad. The losses stemmed from billing disputes, roaming charges disputes, broadband and mobile internet services, unsolicited messages and wrong charges.Last week, Eastern Analytica reported a high level of consumer dissatisfaction regarding their mobile service providers – Maxis, Digi, Celcom and U Mobile – based on pricing, customer service, speed and coverage.
One in five subscribers described services provided by mobile phone operators via online platforms as “trash”, it said. The survey was based on 674,910 online posts gathered from several online platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and blogs. The data on the posts was compiled between November 8 last year and January 7.Shabana said the NCCC received 5,590 complaints on telcos in 2017 and 5,681 in 2016.“We are receiving a lot of complaints from the consumers. They’re facing issues like poor internet connection… complaints that could not be resolved in a timely manner. There are consumers claiming that there are no ports available at their respective areas,” she told The Malaysian Insight. Trend pasang dashcam satu perkembangan positif - MIROS
- Details
Namun selepas siasatan dibuat melalui rakaman dashcam, kita mendapati kemalangan berlaku kerana faktor lain seperti tayar meletup sehingga menyebabkan kenderaan hilang kawalan,” katanya ketika dihubungi Bernama, di sini.

Newsbreak : LRT 3 to be done in 2024
- Details
THE funding conundrum for the light rail transit line 3 or Bandar Utama-Johan Setia line has taken another twist as a number of contractors contend that they have yet to receive payment from Prasarana Malaysia Bhd for work packages completed since last February. Because of this problem, sources say several smaller subcontractors are on the brink of bankruptcy. The sources add that Prasarana has not paid for work that had been completed up to Sept 30, 2018, amounting to RM800 million, and that a meeting was held recently between the work package contractors and the main contractor, MRCB George Kent Sdn Bhd (MRCBGK).
“Prasarana has stopped paying us for the work done since February last year. When we requested a meeting with them, Prasarana went silent,” one of the sources tells The Edge.“We are really hard-pressed in the current situation. How are we going to continue with the work if we are not paid? Some of the smaller subcontractors are saying that they are on the brink of bankruptcy as they don’t have enough cash to roll over,” says another source. The sources say MRCBGK had to let some 100 workers go following a reduction in the project scope by the new government and an extension of the deadline for its completion. Initially targeted to be completed by 2020, the LRT3 will now only be ready in 2024.
Higher Malaysian GDP growth seen in Q4
- Details
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s economic growth in the fourth quarter of 2018 (Q4’18) could accelerate for the first time in a year, after the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth continued to slow down after the third quarter of 2017.However, the pace of growth for the October-to-December 2018 period may only be marginally higher than the Q3’18 GDP growth of 4.4%, according to pundits.A Bloomberg survey of 16 economists has predicted a median GDP growth of 4.5% year-on-year (y-o-y) in Q4’18.The Statistics Department will release the official GDP results tomorrow.
AllianceDBS Research expects the economy to expand by 4.5% in the fourth quarter, sustained by domestic demand despite the weakening external conditions. For full-year 2018, Malaysia’s GDP growth is projected at 4.6% compared to 5.9% in 2017.The research firm said that the manufacturing and services sectors would likely be the drivers of growth in Q4’18.“The recent release of the Q4’18 industrial production index (IPI) data showed that both IPI growth as a whole (Q4’18: 3.5%) and manufacturing IPI growth (Q4’18: 4.5%) remained resilient, coupled with steady exports growth of electrical and electronic manufactured goods during the same quarter.“Meanwhile, total manufacturing sales growth remained strong in Q4’18 (8.5%), along with a steady rise in the prices of goods and services (Q4’18: 0.3%), and the labour force participation rate of 68.6% in Q4’18 compared to 68.5% in Q3’18 will keep the services sector as the main driver of growth,” AllianceDBS Research said via an email to StarBiz.
RM to hit 3.8 against USD by end-2019
- Details
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit may advance gradually to breach the psychological level of 4.0 against the US dollar again, and continue its strengthening path to 3.80 by end-2019, according to RHB Research.
Malaysia’s heightened forex reserves and the dovish tone set by the US Federal Reserve (Fed) are lending support to the domestic unit.Malaysia’s forex reserves rose US$700 million to US$102.1 billion as at Jan 31, 2019, after falling US$600 million in Dec 2018.“The ringgit is expected to continue its strengthening path to 3.80 versus the US dollar by end-2019, also due to the dollar’s weakness on expectations that the US Fed may pause its rate hike stance following signs of slowing US economic growth,” said the research house in a note today.
