DESPITE being Selangor’s royal town, Klang’s cleanliness and its outlook is far from satisfactory or pleasant.Taking a drive around town will reveal poor infrastructure along the roads, shoddy or incomplete work done by contractors, broken drains, unclean roads and even uncut grass. With even the most basic services such as cleanliness and proper infrastructure not met, residents in Klang are getting fed up.They are questioning what the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) is doing to make things better. The council, on the other hand, said rubbish collection and cleaning up the town and residential areas were now under the jurisdiction of KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd.KDEB says it is doing its best, but the people are not cooperating. However, Klang MP Charles Santiago has asked MPK to take charge and do something, and fast, as he has received far too many complaints from residents about cleanliness, poor infrastructure and shoddy work by contractors.

HARGA SILING UNTUK TIKET WAYANG?
- Details
Melestari alam sekitar tanpa beg plastik
- Details

Time to shed royal town’s dirty image

“There is talk among residents that leads me to have the suspicion that a majority of the contracts are being awarded to one or two same persons, who seem to have a close relationship with a senior high- ranking officer in MPK,” said Santiago. He added that residents in different neighbourhoods have noticed that all workers were engaged by one contractor. For example, a worker fixing a broken drain along the road will also be collecting rubbish.Shoddy work is also due to the main contractors not paying workers their salary even after MPK paid up their dues, added Santiago.
Steps to take to avoid future water woes
- Details
BASED on the Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas (a publicly available global database and interactive tool that maps indicators of water-related risks; available at wri.org/resources/maps/aqueduct-water-risk-atlas), some areas in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Perak and Selangor will face water issues by 2020. And global warming is expected to reduce Malaysia’s annual rainfall, further increasing the chance of water shortage if immediate steps are not taken.Review tariffs: Water tariffs are based on customer type such as domestic (residential), commercial and industrial. Bulking up small users with heavy users in the same category stops water operators from increasing tariffs to control large users, as any increase will hurt small users.Improve monitoring systems to reduce non-revenue water: About 35% of Malaysian piped water is lost through leaks, burst pipes, theft and poor metering. Water operators should install meters across their transmission pipes (large pipes) to relay real-time water pressure and volume to a central command centre. The difference between volume and pressure between two connections signifies water loss along the particular pipe, allowing personnel to respond immediately.
Water operators should also upgrade all their water meters to improve water billing accuracy, particularly with large users. Recently, TNB installed digital meters for homes in Melaka which improved reading accuracy. The sudden spike in their electricity bills forced households to be more prudent in their electricity usage in a short span of time.
Women workers’ rights
- Details
THE article in The Star reflecting on International Women’s Day on March 8, “Eyeing balanced growth for women” (Nation, March 9; online at bit.ly/star_women), reminded us of the many blatant forms of discrimination against women that exist in our society.Suhakam’s (Human Rights Commission of Malaysia) reference to the numbers of women workers and their earnings is important but I believe other aspects of the treatment of the most vulnerable women workers should be addressed urgently. Some discriminatory regulations are not only tolerated but seem to be officially endorsed by the authorities. The shocking and shameful prosecution and temporary imprisonment of a Nepali migrant worker, NT, in 2014 for an early termination of pregnancy by a qualified licensed general practitioner was an unprecedented event. Its implications for the inhumane treatment of women migrant workers have yet to be addressed.
It is a shocking example of moral policing of women migrant workers in Malaysia. Though NT was acquitted without her defence being called, the case nevertheless highlighted the plight of these migrant workers bound by draconian regulations under the Home Office, implemented by the clinics under Fomema (Foreign Workers Medical Examination Monitoring Agency) and the immigration department.Worker’s contracts in one case included the phrase that “the employee shall not have any romantic relationships during the period of her contract”. Common sense will tell us that this is a completely unrealistic and inhumane clause – it assumes that these young women who leave home to work in a foreign country for two to three years are expected to behave like robots who only work and sleep.Clearly, romantic relationships are common and so long as they do not interfere with an employee’s ability to work, it should not be a reason for immediate dismissal and deportation. The cost of securing their work as migrants is not cheap and can only be justified financially if these workers complete their full tenure (usually two years at least).

- Details
