PETALING JAYA: Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (Fomca) has suggested that a label be placed on food containing liquid nitrogen.

Fomca deputy president Mohd Yusof Abdul Rahman said liquid nitrogen was not harmful if the supplier, distributor and consumers handled the products properly.

“It is not a problem if it is used the right way,” he told FMT.

“There should be a label showing the proper method of handling the product.”

He was responding to media reports regarding the use of liquid nitrogen in foods claiming it was the cause of a hand injury sustained by a youngster after eating “Dragon Breath” biscuits.

Yesterday, the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) urged the use of freezing ingredients in food to be banned in order to protect consumers, especially children.

CAP research officer Hatijah Hassim said the cryogenic liquid could cause injury if not handled properly.

Liquid nitrogen is formed when nitrogen gas is frozen to below -196°C until it becomes liquid.

Health director-general Noor Hisham Abdullah said suppliers and distributers needed to ensure the liquid was left to evaporate before being sold to avoid scalding or frostbite.
