KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has made early preparations for its three hydroelectric dams since early August to face the monsoon season this year.

"Some of the preparations that were made include the management of the water levels through controlled release of water at all dams and thorough inspection at all hydroelectric stations owned by TNB," said TNB chief ventures officer Datuk Nor Azman Mufti.

"Fire drills and safety and preparation tests with other government agencies who are involved with flood management were also done," he said.

Nor Azman said other than generating renewable energy for the country, the hydroelectric dams also serve as a flood mitigation system which prevents disasters from worsening, especially at downstream river areas.

"Before the monsoon season, the water levels at the dams were reduced through controlled release of the water to ensure that the dams are able to hold the increasing rainwater.

"With that, there is no need to drastically release the water contained at the dams during the monsoon season, which can cause disasters at the downstream river areas," said Nor Azman.

PETALING JAYA: Amid all the news about Covid-19 vaccines, tales still abound of home remedies as an antidote to the virus.

Herbs, healing oils, honey and home-made concoctions – these are some of the “preventive measures” being talked about among Malaysians despite the authorities’ battle against misinformation.

In a tweet on Oct 22, the Health Ministry reminded Malaysians that “there is no cure for #Covid-19 so far. If there are parties selling products that claim to be able to treat Covid-19, it is fake”.

Yet, that has not stopped the “snake oil salesman”.

For example, a banner offering free services related to “vaksin penawar Covid-19” was put up near a tree in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur.

The banner, which displayed a phone number, also stated that “telemedicine was available”.

A picture of the banner was posted last month by a Twitter user named Hafiz, who was amused by it. When contacted later, Hafiz said the banner had since been removed.

Kuala Lumpur: Dianggarkan hampir 100 syarikat penyedia kandungan dikesan melakukan jenayah 'menyedut' kredit prabayar milik pengguna telefon bimbit menyebabkan mangsa kerugian hampir RM100 juta sejak 10 tahun lalu.

KUALA LUMPUR: Ten members of a mule account syndicate were arrested in raids by Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor from Nov 5 to 10.

The syndicate uses bank accounts of low-income individuals for illegal activities such as investment fraud and other scams.
Bukit Aman CCID director Datuk Zainuddin Yaacob said all the suspects arrested were locals aged between 20 and 32 comprising seven men and three women, and they were believed to have purchased each ATM card for between RM500 to RM800 from members of the public.

Members of the syndicate are believed to influence 'investors' by promising them a healthy return, and after a victim places money into the account, they will withdraw it via automatic teller machine (ATM) cards obtained from the account holders who are unaware that the accounts are being used for fraud.

"Following the arrests, the police have received a total of 32 reports involving mule account cases nationwide, involving losses worth about RM1.2 million,” he said.

Zainuddin said members of the syndicate were also found renting condominiums for between RM3,000 to RM5,000 a month to prevent their activities from being detected by the authorities.

PETALING JAYA: Newly-wed ‘Nellie’ jumped from the balcony of her first floor flat at 3.30am to escape her abusive husband, one week into their marriage.

The 21-year-old emotionally and physically battered bride required surgery, having suffered multiple fractures on four toes in the fall.

She was forced by her family into an arranged marriage on March 14, four days before the movement control order (MCO) was enforced in Malaysia because of the Covid-19 outbreak.

On the first day of the MCO, her husband began beating her. He threatened to hunt ‘Nellie’ and kill her if she tried to flee.

‘Nellie’ was recently discharged from the hospital and is at a Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) shelter where she is being assisted with case management.

The story of ‘Nellie’ paints a bleak picture of life for women for whom the lockdown of fear and abuse has intensified.

KEPUTUSAN kerajaan memberi kemudahan akses simpanan persaraan Akaun 1, i-Sinar kepada lebih dua juta pencarum KWSP melegakan banyak pihak. - NSTP/Eizairi ShamsudinNovember 23, 2020 @ 8:56am

– Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,
Gelombang Kebangkitan Asia, 1997

Image for postWe are in the midst of an environmental and social crisis. That might sound alarmist, but recent events have proven this to be an inconvenient truth.

As the world’s population continues to grow to reach 10 billion people by 2050, governments and businesses will need to find drastically different ways to make the food, products and resources we rely on to live.

We speak about the environmental and social challenges we face related to the climate crisis and inequality in our first posting of this publication, A sustainable post COVID-19 economic recovery: how the facts show us there is no other option.

Faced with this new reality, what can we do to create the systemic shift required to create a more sustainable and equitable society? And which factors can play a role in pushing companies in particular to take responsibility for their corporate footprints?

In other words, which drivers can encourage companies to consider their impact on both people and the planet as an intrinsic part of their operations?

The economic and social fallout from COVID-19 has accelerated scrutiny and debate about what stakeholder capitalism means in practice for company decisions and actions. A growing number of investors are viewing environmental and social risks as financial risks, and are pushing companies to consider them.
