IN our society and culture, our perception of reality is shaped by the information and messages we receive through the media. A few generations ago, our culture storytellers were people, family, friends and others in the community. For many people today, the most powerful storyteller is the Internet and the mobile phone. All of us are affected by advertising, news, movies, Facebook, WhatsApp and other forms of media. That is why today, media is such a powerful force.

Children receive a huge amount of information from a wide array of sources, far beyond the traditional media – ie, television, radio, newspapers and magazines – of most parents. There are text messages, memes, viral videos, social media, video games, advertising and more.

From celebrity gossip to magazine covers to WhatsApp messages to memes, media is telling us something, shaping our understanding of the world and even compelling us to think to act in certain way.

Non-communicable diseases (NCD) are the largest cause of death globally. It is estimated that about 41 million people die annually and about a third of these deaths are in the workforce, in the 30-69 years age group. Records for 2015 shows that two out of every three Malaysians have at least one of the three major NCD and the figure is rising. A large part of our Malaysian healthcare budget is spent on managing NCD.

Identifying smoking and sugar as two of the major risk factors for NCD, the new government of Malaysia has quickly brought in a “sugar tax” and a “smoking ban.”Let me begin by defining non-communicable diseases. As the name implies, non-communicable diseases are defined as chronic diseases that are not communicable. This then would include cancers, chronic lung diseases and in certain communities, nutritional deficiencies and not just cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus.

Obesity, undernutrition and climate change are the biggest threats to the world population, linked by profit motives and policy inertia, a top commission said yesterday, calling for a binding plan and trillions of dollars to thwart the dangers.A US$1 billion (RM4.12 billion) fund and action strategies targeting food policy and production are needed urgently to support health, the environment and economic well-being, said the report by the Lancet Commission on Obesity, a panel of experts in agriculture, economics, human rights and other fields.

The three problems of obesity, undernutrition and climate change are intertwined by methods of agricultural production, transport, urban design and land use that will take an enormous toll on the population and planet, the commission said."What we're doing now is unsustainable," said William Dietz (photo), an author of the study and public health expert at George Washington University.

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): About 60% of the 32 million Malaysians fail to throw their garbage into rubbish bins although these have been provided for them, says Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin. She said Malaysians have yet to cultivate proper garbage disposal habits and this should be addressed in efforts to make our country clean."In developed countries, people keep their rubbish in their handbags or pockets before throwing them into trash bins.

Banjir?

PUTRAJAYA: The government is open to using whatever infrastructure available to drive Internet penetration in rural areas throughout the country. There are at least a million people in very remote areas and a further 2.5 million to 2.8 million still with slow-speed Internet access in semi-urban and rural areas. To get faster-speed broadband to outlying areas, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said he is exploring the use of satellites, running fibre along sewerage pipes and even possibly opening access to existing poles that carry wires to homes.

“In terms of infrastructure, a lot more need to be done. There are many areas which have not yet been wired up so there is a need to think outside the box and look into new ways to provide infrastructure which is faster and cheaper for the general public.“That is one of the reasons for the pilot project in Jasin to use existing infrastructure partially to provide broadband to semi-urban and rural areas, and to the Felda settlers. The project is a success and now it is up to Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) to decide what to do from here on. We used TNB poles, which made access quicker and were able to cut cost significantly,” Gobind told StarBiz.Though he seems keen to explore the use of satellites, some experts disagree with the idea as they believe it would be too costly and not practical. They are more receptive to using sewerage pipes for fibre access and Gobind said he had received proposals to have sewerage pipes used to lay cables for Internet access.
