Cost of Living Ministry prepared for any commodity price fluctuations, cartel risks
- Details
SERDANG: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry is prepared to act upon the emergence of any cartel attempting to control prices of chickens or eggs.
Acting minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali admitted it was possible there were risks of cartels cropping up following the government's move to consider floating the prices of the two commodities.
However, he pledged the ministry will do all it can to prevent such a thing.
"There are certain goods that we may float (the price). And when certain goods are floated, there is a risk of cartels being formed.
"Cartels can take the form of price agreements, production alliances, market agreements and similarly, in government procurement, this risk is increasing," Armizan told reporters after attending the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Malaysian Competition Commission (MyCC) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) here today.

Cake concerned over food price hike following removal of chicken subsidies and price controls
- Details
ALOR STAR: The Consumers Association of Kedah (Cake) has expressed concern on the government's decision to withdraw subsidies and price controls on chicken as it would lead towards a price hike of food, piling more burden on low income earners.
Its president Mohamad Yusrizal Yusoff lamented the move as being too drastic and lacking proper preparation in ensuring stability in the retail price of chicken.
"Consumers are worried that once the retail price of chicken is offloaded, chances are that the price will increase, either abruptly or bit by bit.
"There are risks that some breeders and wholesalers will take advantage on the situation to hike up the price," he told the New Straits Times when contacted.
Yusrizal also questioned the timing of the subsidies and price control removal for chicken.
‘It’ll take time to see impact of floated chicken, egg prices’
- Details
PETALING JAYA: It may take some time to see the impact from the government’s decision to float the prices of chicken and eggs, which is expected to be announced today, says an industry expert.
Federation of Livestock Farmers Associations of Malaysia deputy president Lee Yoon Yeau said any impact could only be seen after a period of time.
“This is because the products involve live animals that may be subjected to many issues such as diseases, weather, quality of feed and farm production,” he said in an interview yesterday.
He said while there had never been a shortage of eggs in Malaysia, the industry was “damaged” for the past three years due to the impact from Covid-19 pandemic.
“With the longest price control period in the history of Malaysia (more than 18 months), many farmers have to cut production due to cash flow issues.
