Jangan terjerat Pelaburan Philip palsu
- Details
Schools for poor to open next year, says minister
- Details
PETALING JAYA: The education ministry is aiming to set up schools that cater especially for children from the poorest communities by next year, says its minister Fadhlina Sidek.
She said these schools will ensure that poor students enjoy a higher standard of education.
“We will provide updates as we want to ensure these (special) schools are ready to operate,” she told reporters after launching a school-in-hospital (SDH) programme at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar, Kedah.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government will introduce a new type of school for children from poor families to ensure they are not left behind in their studies.
The school would be similar to a secondary boarding school and cater to poor students, including those who are behind in their studies.
Previously, the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (Ideas) highlighted that the lack of funds was among the reasons why many children from urban and rural low-income families dropped out of school.
Meanwhile, on the SDH programme, Fadhlina said there were a total of 17 SDH in 11 states.
“This (SDH programme) is very important, especially in ensuring access to education for our children, and this includes those in hospitals.”
Govt to announce new mobile postpaid package for civil servants tomorrow
- Details
DENGKIL: The government will announce a special mobile postpaid package for civil servants tomorrow, says communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil.
He said the special package was being offered following complaints from frontline staff in the field regarding their postpaid subscription prices.
“Insya-Allah, tomorrow there will be some special announcements for civil servants,” he told reporters after officiating the Merdeka@Komuniti programme for the Dengkil state constituency at Balai Raya Taman Desa Jenderam Hilir here today.
As for the postpaid package for media personnel, Fahmi said discussions will be held with telecommunication service providers (telcos) tomorrow and the decision regarding the matter will be announced later.
“I will raise the matter (for media personnel), and we will see if the telcos agree or not,” he said, adding that many more good announcements will be made through the efforts of the ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Fahmi said the ministry will continue to intensify efforts to reduce the burden on users and ensure that all levels of society enjoy better services at reasonable prices.
“Hopefully, internet prices will drop after we implement the Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing (MSAP),” he said.
On July 31, Fahmi was reported as saying that internet prices were expected to drop by this September, when the MSAP was adopted.
MCMC, in a statement issued on July 11, said the reduction in retail fixed broadband prices following the implementation of the MSAP could only happen once access agreements have been concluded between service providers.
MCMC said that currently, most access providers have or are in the process of publishing reference access offers.

Peguam hartanah pertahan kenaikan yuran wajar
- Details
KUALA LUMPUR: Persatuan Guaman Hartanah Malaysia (HartaGuam) membantah kenyataan Suruhanjaya Persaingan Malaysia (MyCC) kenaikan yuran guaman membabitkan pemindahan hak milik membebankan pembeli.

Staying informed on misinformation
- Details
KUALA LUMPUR: They started out as government fact-checking portals but Sebenarnya.my and MyCheck Malaysia will now have a bigger role to play – they will deal with the rising misinformation in the country.
The portals are also set to be beefed up and should not be run on a skeleton crew, said Fahmi Fadzil.
“These two units are part of JomCheck (network) which in the lead-up to GE15 had helped to do some fact-checking on things that were published. I have asked for these units to work hand in hand along with JomCheck and the corporate communication units of other ministries,” said the Communications and Digital Minister.
“In case something comes up (information), we will alert, revert and disseminate whether it is true or false,” he said in an exclusive interview with The Star.
Sebenarnya. My was launched in 2017 as a unit under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) while MyCheck. My is under national news agency, Bernama.
Fahmi said the roles of these units can be further strengthened. “I feel their role can be much better coordinated and the unit strengthened,” he said when asked how effective a tool the Sebenarnya.my portal was in quashing misinformation.

‘Add flight subsidies for varsity students into a federal budget’
- Details
PETALING JAYA: Consumer groups have asked the government to consider adding flight subsidies for public university students into the federal budget.
They added that airlines operators should play their role in providing reasonably priced domestic flight tickets.
Fomca chief executive officer Saravanan Thambirajah said including the subsidy into the federal budget will be helpful for students.
“The issue of expensive flight tickets between the peninsula and Sabah and Sarawak has been going on for some time.
“It’s good that the government is coming up with this initiative and it should consider including this into the budget.
“Airlines should also play their part by preparing reasonable flight ticket prices for everyone.
“Providing affordable prices also helps to highlight the airlines’ brand as well as increasing their appeal to customers in the long run,” he said, adding that the Malaysian Aviation Commission too should be proactive in balancing both the needs of consumers and airline operators.
