KUALA LUMPUR: Kerajaan akan menyemak turun harga kit ujian kendiri COVID-19 menjelang akhir tahun, kata Menteri Penyelaras Pelan Pemulihan Negara (PPN), Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

FOMCA, WECAM, FAM: Celebrating World Water Day 2021 – Valuing WaterJuly 16, 2021 @ 1:27pm
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians suffered losses amounting to about RM2.23 billion from cyber-crime frauds since 2017.

According to statistics from the police, a total 67,552 cyber-crime cases were reported between 2017 till June 20 this year.

Of the total, e-commerce scams topped the chart with 23,011 cases, followed by illegal loans (21,008) and investment scams with 6,273 cases.
To put an end to this, the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) and Facebook Malaysia, in partnership with government agencies, industry players and consumer associations today launched a nationwide #TakNakScam awareness campaign.
The campaign is to educate the public on how to identify, check and report against the highly deceptive tactics employed by scammers.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Deputy Minister Datuk Rosol Wahid said that the development of eCommerce was akin to a double edged sword where frauds, scams and other cyber-crimes via digital platforms has increased in line with the success of digital businesses.

He said there were a total of 11,511 (33.2 per cent) complaints on online transactions recorded by the ministry last year, an increase compared to 5,416 (24.7 per cent) complaints received in 2019.

"The complaints have been steadily rising, and as of June 2021, it was one of the most frequent complaints received by the ministry at 45.2 per cent of total complaints.

"Both the government and private sectors must prepare to prevent an impending wave of fraud and if there are no drastic measures taken, the online scam will affect consumer confidence severely among others.

"A more holistic approach is needed to curb this issue that involves many cross agencies, and private sector collaborations," he said when delivering his keynote address via Zoom today.

He launched the #TakNakScam campaign in the presence of Bukit Aman CCID deputy director (Cyber-crimes and Multimedia investigation) Senior Assistant Commissioner Victor Sanjos, Facebook Malaysia interim country director Justin Murugaya, Bank Negara Malaysia Penang branch chief Hasjun Hashim and Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (Fomca) deputy secretary Nur Asyikin Aminuddin.

KUALA LUMPUR: The demand for surgical face masks and hand sanitizers nationwide continues to rise as fears over the novel coronavirus (2019-nCov) mounts. With the two items being out of stock for close to two weeks, consumers are growing anxious over when the goods will be restocked and available for sale. A member of the public, Faezatul Adilah A. Sabri, 26, is hoping that the items will be available soon.

“Nowadays, it is extremely difficult to get face masks. I’ve searched high and low and went to many pharmacies around Damansara for these items and they’re all sold out.

“When I asked when will they be restocked, the retailers cannot give me a definite answer, saying they are also waiting for suppliers to update them. “I really hope they will find a solution to this as soon as possible, as people are getting more anxious and worried every day,” she said. Faezatul, who works in the media industry, said for now, she is doing her best to avoid crowded areas. “I just stay indoors if I don’t have any activities or work that require me to go outside. At this point in time, no matter how scary the situation is, I believe people should stay calm and remain indoors as much as they can,” she said.

PARIT BUNTAR: Small businesses and traders affected by the tax on sweetened drinks which came into effect this month, can file a postponement appeal to the relevant authorities, according to Deputy Entrepreneur Development Minister Mohd Hatta Md Ramli. He said every appeal must provide reasonable grounds for proper consideration. “I hope the domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry will resolve the issue when it receives the appeals from the traders,” he said here after opening an entrepreneurship seminar organised by the Ketian District Malay Hawkers and Petty Traders Association.Small traders have complained about the sugar tax of 40 sen per litre (on sweetened beverages containing more than five grammes of sugar) which came into effect on July 1.

Hatta added that the implementation of the tax was aimed at controlling excess sugar intake among the public for health reasons. On another matter, Hatta proposed that the National Entrepreneur Group Economic Fund (Tekun Nasional) take up the loan method based on the Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia model. He said the method involved group loans with five participants in each group. Through this method, the loan application approval process can be reduced, enabling entrepreneurs to get loans easily.
