CYBERJAYA: Those intending to sell their electronic devices, like smartphone and computer, are advised to send them to CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) for data sanitisation to avoid the theft of their personal data.CSM chief executive officer Datuk Dr Amiruddin Abdul Wahab said the move would help curb cyber harassment, as well as prevent them from becoming victims of exploitation by irresponsible quarters.

“Usually, consumers simply delete the data themselves, like their pictures and documents, before selling their smartphones or computers. It is dangerous because although the data has been deleted, it can still be recovered,” he said in an interview.Amiruddin said CSM, through its MyCyberSecurity Clinic, provided data sanitisation service to the public, including companies, to help maintain their safety and privacy. He said CSM has also set up a one-stop cyber centre known as Cyber999 for the public to lodge complaints on cybercrime and to date, it had received nearly 100,000 reports.

- UTUSAN ONLINE

Jerebu tebal menjejaskan kesihatan cucu saya yang berumur empat tahun”Aileen SundangPeningkatan kes pembakaran terbuka di daerah ini dan daerah berhampiran menjejaskan aktiviti harian penduduk sehingga perlu mengehadkan kegiatan luar rumah.Keadaan itu menyebabkan persekitaran berjerebu apabila Kimanis sebelum ini pernah merekodkan bacaan Indeks Pencemaran Udara (IPU) tidak sihat iaitu melebihi 115.Penduduk Kampung Sabandil, Aileen Sundang, 58, berkata, jerebu yang berlaku sejak awal musim kemarau semakin teruk beberapa hari lalu berikutan kebakaran belukar di kawasan bukit belakang Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sabandil.“Jerebu tebal ini menjejaskan kesihatan cucu saya yang berumur empat tahun. ILLEGAL plastic recycling factories that have been shut down are known to restart operations again or move to a different location.Kuala Langat Environmental Action Association secretary Pua Lay Peng said it will be tough to eradicate all such illegal factories nationwide by July.“It is doable though if the local councils can strictly monitor and prevent them from secretly restarting their operations.“These plastic recycling factories won’t stop operating so easily as there are still a lot of raw materials for them to work with,” Pua said, adding that the raw materials are cheap to import. It was reported that the authorities aim to shut down all illegal plastic waste recycling factories nationwide by July after surpassing its target to close at least 100 such premises before the first quarter of the year.

According to data released by the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry (Mestecc), two in every five plastic recycling factories in Malaysia are found to be operating illegally.Mestecc said 109 out of 274 plastic recycling factories that were raided are unlicensed operations. To date, the government has shut down 140 factories, including licensed factories found to be flouting the Environmental Quality Act 1974.Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin said there was a pressing need to shut down illegal premises following the influx of plastic waste brought into the country since the middle of 2017.

THE recent death of yet another young child from diphtheria, a disease that can be easily prevented by immunisation, is a national tragedy. We should ask ourselves some searching questions: When a young child dies from a preventable disease, whose responsibility is it?It is of course the parents who failed to vaccinate the child. These are not “bad” parents who intentionally want to harm their child, but there is no denying the fact that their reluctance to immunise the child caused his death. Were they unaware of the other children who died recently? There has been sufficient media coverage to know that in 2018, there were 18 cases of young children with diphtheria, and that five died. So why did they expose their child to such a risk?

So why do these parents take such a risky course of action?A certain group of people is also responsible for this child and other children’s death. This is the group that is very loud on social media and quick to give “expert” opinions but fail to be present to take responsibility when children die from easily preventable diseases. They are the alternative and complementary medicine practitioners and some medical doctors. They have brainwashed and misled parents. Religious sensitivities to them are more important than the lives of children. No one is denying the fact that vaccines have side-effects but any sensible review of historical and scientific data will show how vaccines have helped to control many lethal diseases that used to kill and damage thousands of children. The re-emergence of diseases long controlled in the past is due to these anti-vaccine practitioners.I want to ask everyone why we are not taking these anti-vaccine proponents to task. They are the ones who are primarily responsible for the death of the young boy in this latest case.

FOMCA fully supports the National Community Policy as a means to strengthen the rights and responsibilities of consumers at the community level. One of the eight universal consumer rights is the right to be heard, that is for consumers to voice their concerns and for government to take full cognizance of their concerns. While we often focus on the basic needs of food, housing, transport, healthcare and other cost of living issues, the role of consumers in a democracy should not be neglected. Consumers not only have a right to voice their concerns, the government has a responsibility to listen and respond positively to these concerns too.

In some communities, there are well-organised Rukun Tetangga groups or resident associations that function as the voice of the consumer/resident. For those that lack these organisations, the Community Policy would enable the establishment of mechanisms and structures in every area to speak up for them.Vandalism, destruction of public property such as lifts and playground amenities, unhealthy environment that enables the breeding of the Aedes mosquito, haphazard parking, and irresponsible dumping of rubbish continue to occur. This selfish and destructive behaviour of a few individuals leave negative effects on the community as a whole. The Community Policy would make consumers and residents aware of their responsibilities through education programmes.

KOTA TINGGI: Local workers need to toughen up and be less sensitive to survive and thrive in the local job market, said Johor Consumerism Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Dr S. Ramakrishnan. He said he has received reports from employers complaining that local workers are too soft and unable to handle pressure, with many quitting their jobs despite earning good salaries.“Some of them even resigned due to petty issues such as working late hours or seeing their colleagues getting a pay raise or being passed over for promotions,” he added.Dr Ramakrishnan was speaking to reporters after conducting a working visit to Desaru Coast Malaysia here.

He said the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Industrial Training Institute (ILP) should beef up the personality and mentality of local workers to make them better able to meet the demands of industry.Dr Ramakrishnan said he had met up with the TVET and ILP institutions and urged them to make changes in their programmes to produce a better quality workforce.“I have told them not to focus solely on developing skills but also develop the students’ personality and mentality to face any possible situations in the working environment.“This issue is huge and these skills should be imbued in our future workers even at their secondary educational stage,” he said.

Adakah kita memahami konsep tentang kempen hari tanpa beg plastik?
